COMM 230 - Introduction to Public Relations


Familiarize students with the basic concepts and principles of public relations. Designed to give students hands-on experience in public relations on campus, with external organizations, and with social media. This class is a supplemental course for students majoring in communication. PREREQUISITE(S): COMM 108  or COMM 112   Three hours each week.

3 semester hours

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

  • Define the role and function of public relations in society and in different types of organizations.
  • Examine and recall the history, current practice, and future directions of the public relations field.
  • Construct public relations artifacts including a backgrounder, press release and fact sheet
  • Identify the range of public relations functions and specialties.
  • Demonstrate and explain the basic processes of public relations like research, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Identify the theoretical underpinnings and models of effective and ethical public relations.
  • Differentiate between excellent and poor practices of public relations in real world contexts
  • Apply AP stylebook guidelines
  • Demonstrate public relations skills by creating, using, and engaging social media avenues
