AELS 910 - American English Pronunciation, Speaking, and Listening Skills

An introductory course designed to enhance the speaking and listening skills of non-native English speakers. Emphasis is on pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns of American English. Oral communication, listening comprehension, and vocabulary development are stressed. Students build their skills through instruction and intensive practice. PREREQUISITE(S): Placement by testing required by the College for non-native speakers of English. Assessment Level(s): AELW 910 , AELR 910 . Additional laboratory required. Five hours each week. Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

Ascertain the pronunciation of new words using the phonetic codes in the text and in dictionaries.
Display listening comprehension skills commensurate with an intermediate level of English.
Engage in guided conversation practice applying newly learned communication skills.
Predict stress in words and demonstrate the ability to produce stress appropriately.
Recognize and pronounce the sounds of American English, including linked and reduced phrases to increase intelligibility in English.
Recognize appropriate patterns of stress, rhythm, and intonation and use these patterns to increase intelligibility in English.
Set oral communication goals for improving pronunciation, grammar, and fluency in American English.
