KORA 101 - Elementary Korean I


(HUMD [M])

A beginning language course focusing on the study of Korean language and culture. Students begin to develop the ability to communicate in Korean through the consideration of cultural themes, language functions, and authentic situations as they acquire the structures and lexicon to work with written language, conversation, and composition. No prior knowledge of Korean is required. In-class work is supplemented by 20 hours in the language learning laboratory. Three hours each week. Formerly KR 101.

3 semester hours

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

  • Communicate Korean at an elementary level in the skill areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Apply linguistic structures supporting communication at the novice level of proficiency.
  • Demonstrate elementary proficiency in the production and recognition of the Hangul alphabet system.
  • Express and appropriately employ the following language functions: greetings, leave-taking, requesting information, asking for assistance, giving and receiving directions, and expressing opinions.
  • Discuss Korean culture in general.
  • Demonstrate a practical appreciation of Korean culture and specific cultural practices.
  • Discuss the relationship between the cultural practices and products under consideration.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and engage in appropriate sociolinguistic behaviors as he or she develops his or her linguistic ability in Korean.
