PHYS 234 - Physics for the Life Sciences II The second part of a two-semester course in general physics specifically oriented towards applications relevant for students in biology and pre-medical programs. The course covers basic mechanics including forces and energy, properties of matter, and thermodynamics done in authentic biological contexts. PREREQUISITE(S): PHYS 233 or consent of department. Three hours lecture, four hours laboratory/discussion each week.
4 semester hours
Course Outcomes: Upon course completion, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the properties of matter and thermodynamics in biological contexts.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of functional dependence on biological phenomena (scaling, dominance of various effects)
- Solve problems with mixed units in the context of properties of matter and thermodynamics.
- Explain biological effects arising from competitive scaling.
