AELR 930 - Reading for Non-Native Speakers III


The third required course in the reading sequence for AELP students continues the teaching of academic reading of American English presented in the preceding two courses. Emphasis on the advanced college skills required for success in content courses, including advanced paragraph and essay comprehension, critical reading, textbook and media analysis, and rhetorical patterns. PREREQUISITE(S): AELR 920  with a grade of C or better or placement by testing required by the College of non-native speakers of English. Additional laboratory required. Five hours each week. Formerly RD 103.

FIVE EQUIVALENT CREDIT HOURS.  NOT APPLICABLE TO A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE. MAY NOT BE USED TO SATISFY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS. NOT INCLUDED IN GPA CALCULATION.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:

  • Apply the above-mentioned skills and strategies to freshman-level content in authentic academic tasks including summarizing.
  • Demonstrate mastery of an extensive selection of college=level general academic vocabulary.
  • Utilize context clues and word parts to interpret and acquire new vocabulary.
  • Utilize critical reading skills (e.g. inference; differentiating fact from opinion or theory; identifying bias, purpose, and tone, analyzing argumentative techniques) to analyze, evaluate, and respond to readings.
  • Utilize study skills including note taking, graphic organizers, outlining, highlighting and annotating, reading strategies, organization skills, and following oral and written directions.
