ARTT 152 - Photographic Expression I

(ARTD)

Designed to achieve the basics of black-and-white still photographic techniques with additional emphasis on the development of ability to express and understand ideas and feelings communicated in photographs. Students are expected to supply own camera (35mm with manual controls), paper, and film. One hour lecture, four hours laboratory each week. Formerly AR 203.

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

Demonstrate creative problem solving through the application of abstract theoretical concepts, development of observational skills, and the use of technical skills.
Recognize and employ concepts of composition and design in the creation of black and white photographic images. (Abstract Theoretical Concepts)
Observe and analyze works of fine art photography using the language of design, both in written and oral expression. (Abstract Theoretical Concepts)
Relate the contributions of photographers throughout history to his or her own photographic work. (Abstract Theoretical Concepts)
Identify and utilize design elements and principles in the organization and construction of individualized projects. (Observational Skill)
Compare the effects and creative possibilities of various basic darkroom techniques, such as dodging, burning, and cropping. (Observational Skill)
Explore contemporary applications of darkroom technology in works made by professionals in the field of digital art. (Observational Skill)
Identify the various parts and controls of a 35mm SLR camera and explain how to operate it. (Technical Skill)
Describe the factors that control photographic exposure and utilize them in the creation of well-exposed negatives. (Technical Skill)
Expose and print a series of photographs exploring a range of approaches and subject matter. (Technical Skill)
Acquire the basic skills necessary to develop black and white film and print photographic enlargements using appropriate equipment and chemistry. (Technical Skill)
