HORT 105 - Introduction to Sustainable Landscaping

An overview of the basic aspects of the green industry, highlighting current environmental trends and sustainability issues. This course will introduce students to the theoretical and practical aspects of the industry, including techniques and approaches for maintaining and improving soil health and managing stormwater, as well as provide a basic understanding of growth and nutrition to ensure environmental sustainability. Students will learn about national, state, and local guidelines promoting sustainability in landscape design and management. Two hours each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

Describe the scope of the green industry.
Explain the basic aspects of plant biology as they apply to the green industry, including identification, anatomy, growth and ecology of common landscape plants.
Describe the role of soil in plant nutrition, and how soils can be properly managed to contribute to plant growth and environmental sustainability.
List key plant problems, including both abiotic and biotic, and explain the best management practices and to control them.
Outline best management practices to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality.
Summarize how the concept of sustainability applies to the green industry, and how the industry is addressing current issues.
