HLTH 297 - Community Health Worker (CHW) Practicum

In-service training and practical experience, totaling a minimum of 45 hours. The 40-hour practicum experience will take place in an approved health or clinical education setting. Students will spend five additional hours meeting with a full-time faculty member to develop goals and objectives for their practicum experiences and spend time in training and preparation for the onsite clinical practicum. Students will keep a journal of their accomplishments and will submit a final reflection analyzing their overall experiences. PREREQUISITE(S): HLTH 105 . PRE- or COREQUISITE(S): HLTH 160 , HLTH 225 , HLTH 298 . 40 hours in-service, 5 hours on-campus for clinical training. Five hours lecture, 40 hours practicum.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

Identify and describe the cultural understanding and sensitivities necessary to work in a Community Health Worker clinical role.
Describe health literacy and explain how this health concept is involved in the Community Health Worker daily tasks.
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills needed to communicate with health professionals in a clinical setting.
Qualify to apply for a Maryland State Department of Health, Community Health Worker Certification.
