POLI 206 - Political Ideologies


(BSSD, GEEL, GCP)

A survey and analysis of leading ideologies of the modern world such as anarchism, nationalism, fascism and national socialism, classical liberalism and conservatism, Fabian socialism, Marxism-Leninism, and liberal democracy. Some consideration of current extremist ideologies of both left and right. Examination of the nature and function of ideologies in political movements and in governance. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 . Three hours each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Define, describe, and state the significance of the term “ideology.”
  • Compare and contrast various ideological positions on the political spectrum.
  • Identify the values and assumptions of each of these ideological positions.
  • Describe the intellectual origins and historical conditions that have given rise to Democracy, Anarchism, Fascism, Nazism, Socialism, Communism, & Jihadism.
  • Examine critically the socio-political impact of these ideologies.
