SURG 100 - Introduction Surgical Technology (TP/SS only) CE
Introduces the foundation, history, and principles related to Surgical Technology including the skills and techniques needed to perform as a surgical technologist in the operating room. Surgical instrumentation and basic principles of aseptic technique for the surgical technologist are included. PREREQUISITE(S): Admission to the surgical technology program or consent of program coordinator, ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 , MATH 117 or higher, and BIOL 212 . PRE- or COREQUISITE(S): BIOL 213 . Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory each week.

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe the history and development of surgical technology as a profession.
- Discuss various professional organizations and aspects of professional credentialing.
- Analyze the scope of practice in the field of Surgical Technology.
- Identify hazards and discuss the proper safety measures in the operating room environment.
- Employ principles involved in donning appropriate surgical attire and basic handwashing.
- Describe the concept of surgical conscience and the role of the surgical technologist in the provision of quality healthcare.
- Describe the typical operating room designs, equipment, supplies, and instrumentation.
- Discuss Universal/Standard Precautions.
- Explain the importance of asepsis as it pertains to surgery and the hospital environment.
