HLTH 297 - Community Health Worker (CHW) Practicum In-service training and practical experience, totaling a minimum of 45 hours. The 40-hour practicum experience will take place in an approved health or clinical education setting. Students will spend five additional hours meeting with a full-time faculty member to develop goals and objectives for their practicum experiences and spend time in training and preparation for the onsite clinical practicum. Students will keep a journal of their accomplishments and will submit a final reflection analyzing their overall experiences. PREREQUISITE(S): HLTH 105 . PRE- or COREQUISITE(S): HLTH 160 , HLTH 225 , HLTH 298 . 40 hours in-service, 5 hours on-campus for clinical training. Five hours lecture, 40 hours practicum.

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Identify and describe the cultural understanding and sensitivities necessary to work in a Community Health Worker clinical role.
- Describe health literacy and explain how this health concept is involved in the Community Health Worker daily tasks.
- Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills needed to communicate with health professionals in a clinical setting.
- Qualify to apply for a Maryland State Department of Health, Community Health Worker Certification.
