ARTT 268 - History of Photography Explores the global history of photography as an artform and ‘way of seeing’ from the 19th century to the present. Students will develop visual and media literacy skills through understanding the art and science of photography as a creative process and the history of photography as a mode of visual communication. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 . Three hours lecture each week.

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Identify a diversity of artists, artworks, styles, and modes of expression in photography.
- Describe the visual qualities, style, and content of a photograph.
- Demonstrate visual, stylistic, and contextual analysis of photographs.
- Explain the functions, meanings, or impacts of a photograph in its historical and cultural contexts.
- Compare and contrast the visual qualities, content, and contexts of two or more photographs.
- Develop and support arguments using relevant theoretical frameworks, visual and contextual evidence.
- Justify the attribution of a photograph by artist, style, period, or movement.
- Locate and evaluate the artistic production and societal impacts of photography within the scope of global art history.
- Analyze the societal, cultural, and personal impacts of photography on ideas, identity, history, politics, and/or other forms of creative expression.
- Examine the impact of media, technology, and institutions on the creation, interpretation, and reception of photography.
