ARTT 103 - Introduction to 3D Design


(ARTD, GEIR, GEEL)

An introduction to the elements and principles of visual expression, with an emphasis on three-dimensional form. Students will develop the visual vocabulary, technical skills, and critical thinking necessary to engage in creative problem solving. Students will employ a wide range of formal and conceptual approaches, and media, in an exploration of the interaction between surface, form, space, and time. An interdisciplinary, cross-cultural approach will be utilized in introducing methods, materials and concepts of visual expression within the context of both historical and contemporary visual culture. Two hours lecture, four hours studio each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Engage in creative problem-solving by clearly defining design objectives, experimenting purposefully with diverse concepts and media, and synthesizing these elements individually or collaboratively into effective design solutions.
  • Utilize elements of surface, form, space, and time to develop creative 3D design solutions.
  • Develop creative visual solutions that recognize and address contemporary issues.
  • Recognize, explore, and incorporate global influences and perspectives in developing creative solutions.
  • Incorporate knowledge from different fields of study to broaden creative approaches and solutions.
  • Develop strategies for exploring the expressive potential of three-dimensional designs across various settings or venues.
  • Describe and integrate insights about the relational dynamic among artist, audience, and broader culture into personal artistic practice.
  • Demonstrate technical competency across a range of three-dimensional media by completing projects with a consistently high degree of craftsmanship.
  • Demonstrate visual literacy effectively through clear verbal explanations, articulate written reflections, and skilled visual presentations.
