GDES 230 - Photoshop: Advanced Image Editing


(R only) (Also offered as PHOT 230 . Credit cannot be received for both GDES 230  and PHOT 230 .)

An advanced study of Adobe Photoshop as it applies to both graphics and photography. Topics include advanced sharpening techniques, advanced image restoration, contrast control, masking techniques, the utilization of RGB, CMYK, and Lab color models for image correction, and the study of emerging technologies. Students will also learn to calibrate all equipment used in Photoshop imaging, including building individual profiles for output. PREREQUISITE(S): GDES 214  or PHOT 214  or consent of department. Two hours lecture, four hours laboratory each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Explain contrast range as applied to grayscale images.
  • Classify images based on Histogram interpretation.
  • Apply image corrections to achieve color balance and compensate for output limitations.
  • Compare image corrections utilizing Lab, RGB, and CMYK color models.
  • Demonstrate color correction on challenging images.
  • Use advanced masking techniques to isolate areas for correction.
  • Analyze component image channels for the purpose of color fidelity.
  • Apply sharpening techniques utilizing masking and other appropriate tools.
  • Apply advanced methods for image restoration.
  • Analyze digital input and output image quality using quantitative methods.
  • Test white point balance on camera digital metering.
  • Explain color management using color profiles and image tags.
  • Demonstrate workflow management from image input to output.
  • Utilize artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
