MATH 131 - Geometry and Algebra

Intended for early childhood and elementary education majors, this course covers proportions, percents, and real numbers; basic geometry that includes congruence, similarity, symmetry, and transformations; measurement and coordinate geometry; and algebra emphasizing multiple representations. PREREQUISITE(S): A grade of C or better in MATH 130  or consent of department. Four hours each week.

4 semester hours

May not be taken concurrently with MATH 132  without consent of department.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Explain the reasoning used in solving problems involving proportions, percentages, and relationships between quantities using unit rates, tables, double number lines, and/or strip diagrams as supports.
  • Use algebraic reasoning to identify, solve, manipulate, and/or evaluate expressions, equations, functions, patterns of linear and non-linear functions, and patterns of sequences.
  • Develop, apply, and explain basic geometric concepts and skills, including fundamentals of measurement for length, area, and volume.
  • Describe, compare, classify, draw, and analyze plane figures.
  • Perform rigid motions and relate them to congruence, symmetry, and similarity.
  • Interpret statements that use geometric terminology, prove or disprove conjectures about geometric shapes, and perform/explain basic compass constructions.
  • Describe, compare, classify, draw, and utilize technology to study plane and space figures.
