NURS 126 - Nursing Care of Special Populations I: Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing


(TP/SS only)

Introduces concepts related to the promotion of mental health and the nursing care of patients with related disorders across the lifespan. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 113 , NURS 114 , NURS 121 , NURS 129 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 125 . Two hours lecture, twelve hours of clinical each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Apply current research evidence to promote clinical reasoning for the special care needs of adults with alterations in biopsychosocial functioning.
  • Adhere to the legal/ethical responsibilities of the student nurse when providing care to patients with mental health/psychiatric problems across the lifespan.
  • Explain legal issues involved in providing care to patients with alterations in mental health across the lifespan.
  • Correlate performance of nursing techniques with desired physiologic and psychological outcomes when caring for patients with mental health problems.
  • Advocate during acute exacerbations of chronic conditions to prevent further complications for patients with mental health problems across the lifespan.
  • Maintain maximum function and independence of/for patients in need of mental health/psychiatric care across the lifespan.
  • Analyze the risk and benefits of care decisions in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, patient, family and caregiver.
  • Interpret findings and evaluate clinical presentations in order to provide high quality nursing care based on current knowledge and best practices to/for patients with mental health/psychiatric problems across the lifespan.
  • Address the functional status, strengths, wishes, culture and expectations of patients with mental health/psychiatric problems across the lifespan.
  • Apply the principles of therapeutic communication when caring for patients with mental health/psychiatric problems across the lifespan.
  • Use technology to enhance the function, independence and safety of populations of patients with mental health/psychiatric problems across the lifespan.
  • Identify the unique nursing responsibilities in administration of medications to patients with mental health/psychiatric problems across the lifespan.
