A global survey of artistic production from the earliest art through the Medieval period with an emphasis on learning to look at works of art and architecture in their historical, social, and cultural contexts. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101/ENGL 011. Three hours each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

Describe the visual qualities, style, function, content, and contexts of works of art or architecture from the earliest art through the Medieval period.
Critically examine works of art using visual, comparative, and contextual analysis.
Use print and digital resources and technological tools suitable for independent research in art history.
Evaluate and employ reliable and appropriately cited sources in oral and written communication.
Demonstrate contextualized knowledge of a broad range of artists, artworks, and ways of seeing, creating, or experiencing visual art, media, and culture.
Evaluate the impact of museums, institutions, and modes of display on the creation, interpretation, and understanding of global art history.
