HIST 205 - History of Technology


(HUMD, GEIR, GEEL) (R only)

Provides a historical survey of technology and its role in human societies. While the course examines human history through the lens of technology, it also contextualizes technological developments within broader social, political, and cultural frameworks. The course explores themes such as the environment, energy, labor issues, public health, the distinction between science and technology, technological maintenance versus innovation, social responsibility, ethical values, and the contributions of women. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 . Three hours lecture/discussion each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of historical thinking to understand human societies through the study of the world history of technology.
  • Analyze major events, developments, themes, and periods in the history of technology.
  • Examine the interplay between society, technology, and the environment.
  • Identify common misconceptions and myths about technology and its history.
  • Explore the contributions of immigrants, women, and minority groups to technological development.
  • Distinguish between science and technology in terms of purpose, method, and historical role.
  • Explain the importance of sociopolitical and cultural contexts in shaping technological change.
