HORT 131 - Sustainable Landscape Design

An introduction to a sustainable landscape design. This course will introduce students to a functional and thriving landscape design by strategically using plants, materials, and other features to create a more environmentally friendly and efficient outdoor space. Key principles include the use of native plants and the reduction of water consumption, soil erosion, and chemical inputs. Includes the ecology of the site, creating designs to benefit both people and the surrounding environment. Two hours lecture, two hours laboratory each week.

3 semester hours

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Perform a site analysis.
  • Conduct a comprehensive review of the design to ensure the design complies with local zoning codes.
  • Incorporate key sustainable landscape design principles, including ways to reduce water consumption, soil erosion, and waste.
  • Create a landscape design that benefits both people and the surrounding environment.
