PHTH 203 - Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular Rehabilitation (TP/SS only)
Provides students with essential knowledge and clinical skills in neurorehabilitation. It includes lectures and hands-on lab practices to demonstrate common techniques. Students will gain foundational knowledge in physiology, anatomy, motor control, and learning, as well as disease and conditions of the neuromuscular and nervous systems. This course will integrate the application of tests and measures with clinical interventions of the neuromuscular and nervous systems using evidence-based practices. Students will gain important insights into rehabilitating individuals with neuromuscular disorders, including spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and various progressive and non-progressive conditions across all ages. PREREQUISITE(S): PHTH 106 , PHTH 201 . COREQUISITE(S): PHTH 203L, PHTH 206 , PHTH 223 . Four hours lecture, four hours laboratory each week
4 semester hours
Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Describe the anatomy of normal neuromotor systems.
- Describe the physiology of normal neuromotor systems.
- Describe normal developmental milestones across the lifespan.
- Describe popular theories of motor learning and motor control.
- Interpret findings from standard tests and measures of arousal, mentation, and cognition.
- Analyze the impact of common neurological pathologies on achieving developmental milestones.
- Analyze the impact of common neurological pathology on motor control and motor learning.
- Analyze the impact of common neurological pathology on arousal, mentation, and cognition.
- Create clinical interventions for individuals with neurological pathology based on the diagnosis, treatment goals, and physical therapy plan of care.
- Interpret the results of clinical tests and measures of the neuromuscular systems.
- Propose an accurate rationale for the progression and documentation of clinical interventions within the plan of care.
