MATH 017 - Elements of Statistics Support


A corequisite course designed to equip students with the skills needed to be successful in MATH 117  by providing support in fundamental mathematics. Topics include operations on real numbers, evaluation of algebraic expressions, finding the mean and median of sets of data, analyzing and interpreting graphs of data sets, and basic probability. PREREQUISITE(S): Appropriate score on the mathematics assessment test or consent of the department.Two hours each week. TWO EQUIVALENT CREDIT HOURS. NOT APPLICABLE TO A DEGREE OR CERTIFICATE. MAY NOT BE USED TO SATISFY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS. NOT INCLUDED IN GPA CALCULATION. COREQUISITE(S): MATH 117  Elements of Statistics Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101  / ENGL 101A  or AELW 940/EELAI 990  , READ 120  or AELR 930/ELAR 980  . Two hours each week

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

  • Perform operations with real  numbers
  • Recognize and apply absolute values and ordering of real numbers
  • Evaluate expressions using the order of operations
  • Solve applications involving rational numbers
  • Calculate the mean and median of sets of data
  • Analyze and interpret graphs of data sets
  • Analyze and solve application problems involving basic probability
