The music certificate curriculum consists of music courses that are required in music major programs at professionally accredited colleges, universities, and conservatories. It is intended for students who wish to transfer to these institutions.

Students would be advised to take approximately 30 additional credits chosen to match the first two years of the program into which they plan to transfer.

Applied Music (8 Credits Hours)

Students will take the following:

MUSC 147 - Applied Music 2 semester hours
MUSC 148 - Applied Music 2 semester hours
MUSC 215 - Applied Music 2 semester hours
MUSC 216 - Applied Music 2 semester hours

Applied Music Laboratory (4 Credits Hours)

Students will take MUSC 150 four times.

Large Ensemble (4 Credits Hours)

Students will take the following:

MUSC 166 - College Orchestra 1 semester hour
AND/OR
MUSC 163 - College Chorus 1 semester hour

Music Theory (12 Credit Hours)

Students must take the following:

MUSC 190 - Music Theory I 3 semester hours
MUSC 191 - Music Theory II 3 semester hours
MUSC 233 - Music Theory III 3 semester hours
MUSC 234 - Music Theory IV 3 semester hours

Ear Training and Sightsigning (8 Credit Hours)

Students will take the following:

MUSC 194 - Ear Training and Sightsinging I 2 semester hours
MUSC 195 - Ear Training and Sightsinging II 2 semester hours
MUSC 237 - Ear Training and Sightsinging III 2 semester hours
MUSC 238 - Ear Training and Sightsinging IV 2 semester hours

Total Credit Hours: 36

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this program a student will be able to:

Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of music theory from basic notation and ear training through part writing and macroanalysis at the sophomore level.
Identify musical periods and styles from the Middle Ages to the present.
Demonstrate a level of proficiency in music performance/evaluation for transfer to a four-year program in music or for work in a variety of music-related careers.
