BIOL 151 - Principles of Biology II

Second in a two-semester sequence intended for Biological Science majors. This course examines the basis of life at the level of the organism, evolution, taxonomy, kingdoms of life, ecology, and behavior and applies quantitative skills to interpret biological processes. Biological Science majors are expected to take BIOL 150  first. PREREQUISITE(S): A grade of C or better in MATH 165 . PRE- or COREQUISITE(S): CHEM 131 . Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 . Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory each week.

4 semester hours

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Analyze and interpret experimental results using statistical analyses to reinforce biological principles.
  • Describe the diverse adaptations and ecological roles of organisms within each group.
  • Describe the theory of evolution, including principles of microevolution and macroevolution, and describe how scientists create and interpret phylogenetic diagrams of evolutionary events.
  • Differentiate among organisms representing the different lineages of life and differentiate among major groups within those lineages.
  • Explain how human activities alter existing biodiversity and impact evolutionary and ecological processes.
  • Explain the basic principles of ecology, including population, community, and ecosystem ecology.
  • Apply mathematical concepts and modeling to understand and describe biological phenomena.
