ARTT 278 - Art of the United States


A survey of art produced in the United States and its territories from the colonial period to the present. This course considers the central role of artistic production in the construction and dissemination of American identities and culture. The course explores the art of the United States in its global contexts with a focus on the social, political, and aesthetic contexts of its production in a multicultural society. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 . Three hours each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Identify a diversity of artists, artworks, styles, and modes of visual communication by artists of the United States, its territories, and diasporas.
  • Describe the visual qualities, style, and content of a work of art.
  • Perform visual, stylistic, and contextual analysis of a work of art.
  • Explain the function, meaning or significance of a work of art in its historical and cultural contexts.
  • Compare and contrast two or more works of art across a body of work, time periods, regional styles, or global artistic traditions.
  • Develop and support art historical arguments using relevant theoretical frameworks, visual, and contextual evidence.
  • Justify the attribution of a work of art by artist, style, period, or movement.
  • Locate and evaluate the artistic production of artists in the United States within the scope of global art history.
  • Analyze the differences as well as commonalities among peoples by studying the ideas, history, values, and/or creative expressions of artists of the United States.
  • Examine the impact of global cultural institutions on the creation, interpretation, and reception of the Art of the United States.
