ASLP 285 - Practicum in ASL


This course invites students to explore some specific practical applications of ASL, to consider the implications of these applications, and to examine their own assumptions of these ASL aspects more closely. The studies in this independent course will help students who want to make the most of their skills, using ASL in practical situations (interpreting, peer tutoring, helping other students, or working in ASL environment). PRE- or COREQUISITE(S): ASLP 269  and an earned score of 3.0 or better in the ASL Proficiency Interview, or consent of department. Nine hours of work each week.

3 semester hours

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Analyze their own assumptions regarding the practical application of their skills in ASL.
  • Recognize the importance of the Maryland Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and describe the requirements for certification/associate degree/bachelor’s degree.
  • Work successfully in a professional environment related to the Deaf. 
  • Investigate and identify specific practical applications of ASL skills.  
  • Increase ASL proficiency in real-world practical activities including human interactions, peer tutoring, mentoring, or working in ASL environment.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of different ASL registers in diverse environments.
  • Reflect on the practicum experience and explain how it relates to future professional and personal goals.
