GDES 134 - Illustration I


(R only)

Introduction to illustrative drawing and painting, using traditional and digital media. Topics include units on drawing from observation, basic composition, conceptualizing, visual narrative and sequential storytelling, and output for print and interactive media, the employment market, and business practices. PREREQUISITE(S): ARTT 100  or portfolio placement by consent of department. Two hours lecture, three hours laboratory each week.

3 semester hours

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate key elements of successful illustration: communication, composition, shape, value, texture, color, image.
  • Identify key movements and innovations in the history of illustration.
  • Demonstrate a variety of traditional and digital techniques used in illustration.
  • Identify major markets, trends, and uses for illustration such as editorial, book, advertising, institutional, animation, sequential.
  • Create visual images interpreting written text, abstract ideas and concepts.
