AUTO 264 - Hybrid/Electric Vehicles

Preparation for ASE L-3 Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle technician certification exam. Discusses the purpose, parts, operation and failure diagnosis of automotive hybrid electric vehicles. Topics include inspection, maintenance, testing, diagnosis and repair of high voltage battery systems, electric motor drive systems, power electronics and hybrid supporting systems. Special diagnostic requirements for the hybrid “ICE” will be included. Current hybrid platforms will also be discussed. PREREQUISITE(S): A grade of C or better in AUTO 262 and AUTO 263. Two hours each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

Identify and describe operation of popular driveline formats.
Describe the various drive modes.
Inspect and demonstrate proper use of PPE when testing/servicing high voltage systems.
Demonstrate safe and proper use of a DMM when testing high voltage circuits.
Inspect, test, diagnose, and replace high voltage battery modules, packs, fuses, and isolation components.
Inspect, test, diagnose, and replace faulty high voltage wiring.
Inspect, test, and diagnose faults in AC motors and the inverter.
Inspect, test, and diagnose faults in the DC/DC converter.
Perform basic ICE tests on hybrid vehicles.
Inspect, test, diagnose, and repair engine/electronics cooling systems.
