COMM 225 - Intercultural Communication An introduction to the fundamental topics, theories, concepts, and themes at the center of the study of intercultural communication. The course defines and identifies different cultures at work in society and facilitates effective verbal and nonverbal communication across and between different cultures. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 , or READ 120 . Three hours lecture each week.

Course Outcomes: Upon course completion, a student will be able to:
- Analyze how an individual’s culture(s) affects his or her communication.
- Identify primary differences in communication practices of different cultures.
- Demonstrate increasing ability to communicate effectively with other cultures.
- Identify and explain the benefits and challenges in intercultural relationships.
- Progress from an ethnocentric toward an ethno-relative state regarding culture.
- Identify and explain the central dimensions of intercultural communication.
- Devise strategies for the development of intercultural communication competence.
- Demonstrate a variety of verbal and nonverbal techniques for creating and maintaining a positive climate among people from different cultures.
- Improve their critical thinking skills.
- Evaluate if information gathered about a culture is valid or ethnocentric in nature.
- Recognize and be sensitive to different communication styles among ethnic groups and culturally diverse populations.
- Communicate competently and solve problems as part of a cultural diverse group.
