ARTT 274 - Indigenous Art of the Americas

An introduction to visual art and culture created by indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. The course explores the diverse artistic production, histories, and cultural contexts of indigenous art from North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101/ENGL 011, READ 120. Three hours each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

Describe the visual qualities, style, and content of works of art or architecture from the indigenous Americas.
Demonstrate skills and cultural sensitivity in visual, comparative, contextual, and critical analysis of works of art across time, space and/or culture.
Demonstrate proficiency in recognition, questioning, and application of fundamental terminology, concepts, and methods of Art History.
Employ the appropriate technologies for conducting research in art history including print and/or digital sources.
Use critical thinking and research skills to evaluate and employ reliable and appropriately cited sources in oral and written communication.
Formulate a thesis about the meaning or significance of a work of art in context and support the thesis with evidence and argumentation.
Demonstrate contextualized knowledge of a broad range of indigenous artists, artworks, and ways of seeing, creating, or experiencing art in the Americas from the earliest humans to the present.
Evaluate the impact of museums, institutions, and modes of display on the creation, interpretation and understanding of Indigenous Art in the Americas.
