NURS 100 - Foundational Principles of Practical Nursing (ECEC and TP/SS only)
First course in the series of practical nursing training. Topics include introduction to the nursing profession, core concepts of nursing, assessment of patients, overview of relevant anatomy and physiology, and basic nursing care. PREREQUISITE(S): BIOL 130 , BIOL 131 with a grade of C or better. COREQUISITE(S): NURS 101 . Three hours lecture each week.
3 semester hours
Requires admission to the Practical Nursing program (permission of department, mandatory orientation).
Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Comply with legal and ethical responsibilities related to standards in nursing practice.
- Identify and apply practices that reduce the potential for patients to develop complications related to health procedures and existing conditions.
- Provide nursing care for patients that incorporate the knowledge of growth and development, prevention, and early detection.
- Provide care to assist with promotion and support of emotional, mental, and social well-being of patients.
- Provide comfort to patients and assistance in activities of daily living.
- Collaborate with the health care team members to facilitate effective patient care.
- Demonstrate the use of technology and informatics in the health care setting.
- Contribute to the protection of patients and health care personnel from health and environmental hazards.
