NURS 101 - Foundational Principles of Practical Nursing Lab/Clinical


(ECEC and TP/SS only)

Illustrates and reinforces the concepts discussed in NURS 100 . Skills learning focuses on assessment, basic nursing interventions, client safety, and concerns of the long-term care patient. The course consists of 100 laboratory and clinical hours. Clinical/Health requirements of hosting facilities include American Heart Association BLS CPR, physical exam, background check, drug/ alcohol screening, and immunizations. PREREQUISITE(S): BIOL 130 , BIOL 131  with a grade of C or better. COREQUISITE(S): NURS 100 . Three hours lab and four hours clinical each week.

2 semester hours

Requires admission to the Practical Nursing program (permission of department, mandatory orientation).

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Comply with legal and ethical responsibilities related to standards in nursing practice.
  • Demonstrate proper documentation techniques that support accurate, thorough, and timely charting.
  • Demonstrate proper medication preparation using six rights.
  • Apply principles of the nursing process to an actual or simulated patient record.
  • Demonstrate proper assessment techniques when collecting data on patients.
  • Measure vital signs and compare to baseline vital signs.
  • Provide nursing care for patients that incorporates the knowledge of growth and development, prevention, and early detection.
  • Provide care to assist with the promotion and support of the emotional, mental, and social well-being of patients.
  • Provide comfort to patients and assistance in activities of daily living.
  • Collaborate with health care team members to facilitate effective patient care.
  • Review interventions that can assist in reducing the risk of patient injury.
  • Demonstrate the use of technology and informatics in the health care setting.
  • Perform basic drug calculations accurately.
  • Demonstrate proper techniques that support patient mobility and prevent complications of immobility.
  • Demonstrate hand hygiene and standard precautions.
