NURS 109 - Practical Nursing Capstone Lab/Clinical


(ECEC and TP/SS only)

Illustrates and reinforces the concepts discussed in NURS 108 . Skills learning focuses on nursing needs of acute care populations, with a focus on assessment, safety, and implementation of integrated care plans. The course consists of 100 laboratory and clinical hours. Clinical/health requirements of hosting facilities include American Heart Association BLS CPR, physical exam, background check, drug/ alcohol screening, and immunizations. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 113 , NURS 114 , NURS 121 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 108 . Three hours lab and four hours clinical each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Analyze growth and development milestones to assess pediatric patients’ progress and identify deviations for intervention.
  • Evaluate patient behavior and mental status to recognize signs of mental health problems and formulate appropriate care plans.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions based on pathophysiological, nutritional, and pharmacological considerations, ensuring quality care for patients with medical/surgical conditions.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate care and education to pediatric patients and their families, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with mental health patients, demonstrating empathy and understanding while promoting patient autonomy and self-care.
  • Demonstrate caring communication skills and cultural sensitivity when contributing to the plan of care for adult patients.
  • Provide health care information and reinforce established teaching plans for patients.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive care for patients across the lifespan and care continuum.
  • Use technology to access electronic health records and evidence-based practices, enhancing communication and information sharing among healthcare providers.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of technology and informatics in the healthcare setting contributing to efficient and accurate healthcare.
  • Implement safety measures to prevent falls and injuries and maintain a safe environment for patients and healthcare personnel.
  • Contribute to the protection of patients and healthcare personnel from health and environmental hazards, maintaining a safe and healthy medical/surgical environment.
  • Implement national patient safety goals and safe nursing practices in the clinical setting.
