ARTT 263 - Professional Practice for the Visual Artist


In this capstone course of the A.F.A. curriculum, students develop an artist statement, résumé, portfolio, and slides in preparation for a formal presentation that conveys their experiences and skills as an emerging artist. PREREQUISITE(S): Completion of first year of the A.F.A. curriculum. Two hours studio/laboratory each week. Formerly AR 275.

1 semester hour

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

  • Construct and organize a quality and professional portfolio.
  • Review all work and decide what to include into his or her portfolio.
  • Decide what is missing and needs to be added to his or her portfolio.
  • Professionally present his or her work (this may include matting, mounting, and shrink wrapping work).
  • Put together slides and/or a CD-Rom of portfolio pieces.
  • Prepare a complete application to transfer to a higher academic institution.
  • Develop a resume.
  • Present his or her portfolio in front of a group of peers, faculty, and professionals at the end of the semester.
