PRNT 125 - Introduction to QuarkXPress


(R only)

This course offers an introduction to the page layout and design application QuarkXPress. Topics include tools and procedures used for creating page elements, procedures for document construction, importing graphics and text, use of spot colors, color builds, and color separations for print production. Additional topics may include an introduction to use of an imagesetter, color proofing procedures, trapping, and preflighting. PREREQUISITE(S): None, but previous computer experience recommended. Four hours each week. Formerly PR 130.

Course Outcomes:
Upon course completion, a student will be able to:

  • Explain the overall process for the production of single, multi-page, magazine and multi-color documents in a conventional or digital workflow.
  • Produce single and multi-page documents in black and white and color (process and spot) for successful output to printers and high-resolution printing presses.
  • Select and use properly all of the tools in the application’s tool box and be able to use all features of the software for “fine tuning” documents for high resolution output.
  • Identify and set color management controls including profiles for color images within the software application to achieve consistent color from input to output devices.
  • Perform preflighting functions for troubleshooting files prior to output.
  • Solve practical problems in publishing and output files in correct format such as EPS and PDF for conventional or digital workflow.
