READ 238 - Methods of Teaching Reading in the Secondary Content Areas, Part I This course, designed for current and prospective secondary educators, covers the essentials of the reading processes necessary for secondary students to become proficient readers. Students will investigate five areas: types of reading, assessment, reading skills, reading instruction, and motivation for reading. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education’s reading requirement for secondary educators. PREREQUISITE(S): Successful completion of one year of college-level English, or consent of department. Formerly RD 238.

Course Outcomes: Upon course completion, a student will be able to:
- Use reading and writing as constructive and interactive processes to help students increase knowledge and understanding in the content.
- Construct activities to empower students to become active learners so they can take responsibility for their own learning.
- Use reading and writing assessment data to improve instruction.
- Assess and analyze resources such as textbooks, other written materials, and media resources.
