BSAN 101 - Introduction to Business Analytics


(R only)

An introduction to business analytics and the use of data for decision making in business functions. Course topics focus on understanding various business functions such as sales, customer service, marketing, or IT, and applying essential skills and tools to measure and improve operational outcomes.  Students use Microsoft Excel in practical business scenarios to summarize, visualize, and analyze data. Other data analytics software is also introduced. PREREQUISITE(S): A minimum grade of C or better in ELAI 990  or appropriate score on the English assessment test. Assessment Level(s): ENGL 101 /ENGL 011 , MATH 050 . Three hours each week.

3 semester hours

May not be taken concurrently with MATH 017  or MATH 020  or MATH 030  or MATH 045  without appropriate Math assessment score.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Discuss four primary business functions: operations, finance and accounting, marketing, and human resources.
  • Define business intelligence, management science, operations research, and decision support systems.
  • Explain the difference between data analytics and business analytics.
  • Differentiate between the three types of analytics used in business: descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive.
  • Summarize how managers use business analytics to make decisions in relation to the four business functions discussed.
  • Use MS Excel to summarize, analyze, and visualize data.
  • Employ the different types of business analytics to analyze and prescribe solutions involving scenarios related to the four business functions.
