NURS 106 - Acute Care Practical Nursing


(ECEC and TP/SS only)

Fourth course in the series of practical nursing training. Topics include the care of adults with common medical/surgical health problems requiring management in an acute care facility. Application of pathophysiology, nutrition, and pharmacology to co-morbid diseases within each topic area. The course includes a review for the NCLEX-PN at the end of the course. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 104 , NURS 105 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 107 . Four hours lecture each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate legal and ethical nursing practice, ensuring compliance with standards while providing care to patients with acute, chronic, or emergent physical health conditions.
  • Administer medications and monitor patients receiving parenteral therapies, reducing the risk of complications in medical/surgical settings.
  • Identify and apply practices to minimize potential complications related to health procedures and existing conditions through comprehensive nursing care and effective collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Provide nursing care that integrates knowledge of growth and development, prevention, and early detection of health issues, promoting holistic patient care.
  • Support the emotional, mental, and social well-being of patients, ensuring their comfort and assisting with activities of daily living in medical/surgical settings.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to facilitate effective patient care.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of technology and informatics in the healthcare setting, contributing to efficient and accurate patient care.
  • Contribute to the protection of patients and healthcare personnel from health and environmental hazards, maintaining a safe and healthy medical/surgical environment.
  • Develop care plans that address the complex needs of patients with co-morbid diseases, applying principles of pathophysiology, nutrition, and pharmacology.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions based on pathophysiological, nutritional, and pharmacological considerations, ensuring quality care for patients with medical/surgical conditions.
