NURS 105 - Practical Nursing for Special Populations Lab/Clinical (ECEC and TP/SS only)
Illustrates and reinforces the concepts discussed in NURS 104 . Skills learning focuses on nursing needs of special populations including maternal-child and mental health. The course consists of 100 laboratory and clinical hours. Clinical/Health requirements of hosting facilities include American Heart Association BLS CPR, physical exam, background check, drug/ alcohol screening, and immunizations. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 102 , NURS 103 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 104 . Three hours lab and four hours clinical each week.

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Adhere to legal and ethical standards in nursing practice specific to pediatric and obstetric care, ensuring compliance with regulations for newborn screenings and maternal care.
- Adhere to legal and ethical standards in nursing practice specific to mental health care, including patient confidentiality and involuntary admission procedures.
- Analyze growth and development milestones to assess the developmental progress of pediatric patients and identify any deviations for intervention.
- Evaluate patient behavior and mental status to recognize signs of mental health problems and formulate appropriate care plans.
- Provide developmentally appropriate care and education to pediatric patients and their families, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with mental health patients, demonstrating empathy and understanding while promoting patient autonomy and self-care.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including RNs and advanced providers, to ensure comprehensive care for pediatric and obstetric patients.
- Communicate effectively with mental health professionals and community resources to coordinate care and support for mental health patients.
- Utilize technology for fetal monitoring during labor and delivery, ensuring accurate assessment of fetal well-being.
- Use technology to access electronic health records and evidence-based practices for mental health care, enhancing communication and information sharing among healthcare providers.
- Implement safety measures to prevent falls and injuries, including proper handling and positioning techniques.
- Identify and apply safe practices for mental health patients to mitigate potential risks, such as self-harm or aggression, through regular assessments and interventions.
