NURS 102 - Sub-Acute Practical Nursing (ECEC and TP/SS only)
Second course in the series of practical nursing training. Topics include health promotion and safety, common health problems in restorative facilities, and end-of-life care. Application of pathophysiology, nutrition, and pharmacology to common diseases within each topic area. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 100 , NURS 101 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 103 . Three hours lecture each week.

Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and adherence to, legal and ethical standards specific to sub-acute and long-term care nursing practice, including end-of-life care.
- Administer medications and monitor patients receiving parenteral therapies, including those in palliative care, in a safe and effective manner.
- Implement strategies to prevent and manage complications associated with health procedures and existing health conditions, particularly focusing on comfort and dignity in end-of-life care.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development, prevention, and early detection to provide comprehensive nursing care for patients, including end-of-life care planning and support.
- Promote and support the emotional, mental, and social well-being of patients, with a particular emphasis on providing comfort and dignity in end-of-life care.
- Provide comfort and assist patients with activities of daily living, ensuring a compassionate approach to end-of-life care.
- Manage care for patients with acute, chronic, or emergent physical health conditions, including end-of-life symptom management and support.
- Collaborate effectively with members of the healthcare team to ensure comprehensive and coordinated patient care, especially in end-of-life care planning and decision-making.
- Utilize technology and informatics tools relevant to sub-acute and long-term care settings to enhance patient care and communication.
- Identify and mitigate health and environmental hazards to protect patients and healthcare personnel, with specific consideration for end-of-life care environments and needs.
