NURS 103 - Sub-Acute Practical Nursing Lab/Clinical


(ECEC and TP/SS only)

Illustrates and reinforces the concepts discussed in NURS 102 . Skills learning focuses on nursing needs in the sub-acute environment (e.g., rehabilitation) and ongoing focused assessment of patients in restorative care. The course consists of 100 laboratory and clinical hours. Clinical/Health requirements of hosting facilities include American Heart Association BLS CPR, physical exam, background check, drug/ alcohol screening, and immunizations. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 100 , NURS 101 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 102 . Three hours lab and four hours clinical each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate compliance with legal and ethical standards specific to sub-acute and long-term care nursing practice, including end-of-life care.
  • Select appropriate interventions within an established plan of care for potential/actual complications of the older adult patient.
  • Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, and nutrition to the care of older adult patients with common health problems.
  • Perform medication calculations accurately and make clinical decisions regarding dosage.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development, prevention, and early detection to provide holistic nursing care for patients, including end-of-life care planning and support.
  • Promote and support the emotional, mental, and social well-being of patients, with a particular emphasis on providing comfort and dignity in end-of-life care.
  • Provide compassionate assistance with activities of daily living, ensuring patient comfort and dignity, especially in end-of-life care.
  • Manage care for patients with acute, chronic, or emergent physical health conditions, including end-of-life symptom management and support.
  • Demonstrate effective interprofessional collaboration when reporting and documenting focused assessment findings and interventions utilized for the older adult patient in clinical and simulated lab settings.
  • Collaborate effectively with members of the healthcare team to ensure comprehensive and coordinated patient care, especially in end-of-life care planning and decision-making.
  • Utilize technology and informatics tools relevant to sub-acute and long-term care settings to enhance patient care and communication.
  • Administer medications and monitor patients receiving parenteral therapies, including those in palliative care, in a safe and effective manner.
