NURS 104 - Practical Nursing for Special Populations


(ECEC and TP/SS only)

Third course in the series of practical nursing training. Topics include health promotion in special populations and concerns: reproductive health, obstetrics/neonates, growth and development across the lifespan, and mental health and illnesses. Application of pathophysiology, nutrition, and pharmacology to common diseases within each topic area. PREREQUISITE(S): NURS 102 , NURS 103 . COREQUISITE(S): NURS 105 . Four hours lecture each week.

Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Adhere to legal and ethical standards in nursing practice specific to pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health care.
  • Administer medications and monitor patients receiving parenteral therapies, focusing on pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health populations.
  • Identify and apply practices to minimize potential complications from health procedures and existing conditions in pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health care.
  • Deliver nursing care in pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health settings integrating knowledge of growth and development, prevention, and early detection.
  • Support emotional, mental, and social well-being in pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health patients.
  • Provide comfort and aid in daily living activities for pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health patients.
  • Care for pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health patients with acute, chronic, or emergent physical health conditions.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team for effective patient care in pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health settings.
  • Use technology and informatics in pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health care to improve patient care and communication.
  • Identify and apply safe practices to minimize health and environmental hazards for patients and healthcare personnel in pediatric, obstetrics, and mental health settings.
